Feeling Overwhelmed? Try Mental Minimalism

anxiety Sep 13, 2023

Hey Friends,

As life gets busier and more complex, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed out. That's where mental minimalism comes in - a way to clear your mind and focus on what truly matters.

Here are some tips on how to implement mental minimalism into your life:

1. Get a notebook, either physical or digital, where you can do brain dumps. This way, you can jot down all of your thoughts and ideas in one place, freeing up mental space. Things are too big when they live inside our head. Write it all out, see it outside of you head, and make steps to process it bit by bit.

2. Cut out information that's not immediately helpful - such as news, scrolling social media, etc. This can help reduce distractions and increase focus. Too much sensory information coming in can really distract us and cause us to lose track of what is actually important. Remove these unhealthy distraction and replace them with healthier options and see how your life changes! Less is more!

3. Focus on only the things you can directly control. Let go of things that are beyond your control and focus on what you can do right now. Ask yourself daily: "Where do I have influence?" or "What can I actually control today?" These are two of my favorite questions! Add it to your daily routine and see how you end up moving based on those answers. We can never control other people, places or things, but we always have true power and control when it comes to ourselves. Focus there.

4. Only monotask. Multitasking can lead to increased stress and decreased productivity. Instead, try using scheduling frameworks such as the Pomodoro Technique to help you focus on one task at a time.

There are 6 major steps to the Pomodoro Technique:
Identify a task or tasks that you need to complete
Set a timer for 25 minutes
Work on a task with no distractions
When the alarm sounds, take a 5-minute break
Repeat the process 3 more times
Take a longer 30-minute break and start again

By implementing these tips, you can start to declutter your mind and focus on what truly matters.

Give mental minimalism a try and see how it can help you in your daily life.
